Title True or False? 1st grade
Description The purpose of this activity is to support students’ development of algebraic thinking by focusing on students’ conceptualization of the equal sign. Students often have an operational view of the equal sign in which the equal sign indicates the answer to an expression. In this activity students are presented with equations in which the sum or difference appears on the right side of the equation as well as the left side. Additionally, the equal sign is used to falsely relate two quantities without an operation. Some students may state that the equal sign cannot appear on the left side of an equation or that an operational sign (addition or subtraction) is needed. These less common equation structures are intended to elicit student thinking and support students’ development of a relational view of the equal sign: viewing the equal sign as indicating equal relationships regardless of position or presence of an operational symbol.
